Environment
Our gardens are all organic and other flowers we buy come from local or markets that are fair-trade. I encourage clients to try to think local and seasonal when planning their events. If possible we work with all local seasonal flowers either from Flower Hill or other nearby growers. We do not support the flower industry when it buys flowers from countries who do not treat their workers well or when they use pesticides with no regard to the environment or humans. We also use just simple glass vases that do not demand plastics liners.
People
We do not support growers who do not treat their workers fairly ... it has been a long time coming but the flower industry is trying to improve on many inhumane issues... the more the public is aware that the flowers they put on their tables or in their noses are tainted with poisons and that people may be working in horrid conditions they will demand change. I have been trying to raise awareness for many years now... by educating my clients and buyers. The more we ask questions about where any product comes from and what are the growing practices of said product the sooner a true change will come. I try to multiply my actions times millions when I do something... that gives power to my choices.
Community
We do many fund raiser events for free and offer gift certificates for auctions that help local schools. Also by supporting other local flower growers.
Animals and Wildlife
This is a hard one... for harvesting flowers is taking food from insects. We pick less for our personal use and enjoy them more in the gardens and also less can be best... a more free natural style of arranging flowers with only a few in each vase instead of filling a vase full with so many flowers is a way to leave more outside for the insects... you can actually see the individual beauty of each flower more this way. The arrangements are more poetic. When we think more about all the aspects of our choices in the way we live our lives ... these thoughts become not silly or impractical but a more visionary partnership with nature. It is good for some plants... to harvest their flowers as they keep producing when cut and some pruning is always a helpful thing for shrubs and small trees. Not using poisons or chemical fertilizers in our gardens is good for us, our environment and wildlife.
